Delightful FLU launch in Carenage

taken from Catholic News May 27, 2007 page 3

By Joan Thomas

There is a great future for the young men and women of St Peter’s Parish, Carenage.
On Mother’s Day, the Family Life Unit of the parish of St Peter’s, Carenage was launched at a Tea Party and Fashion Show on the beautiful church grounds with the added ambience of the strong sea breeze and colourful decorations under well-placed tents. That day was specifically chosen to highlight mothers and their powerful role in families.

But the fathers, led by pannist Randolph Williams, or rather the Men’s Group accompanied by Fr Guiseppi CSSp leader of the parish, stole the show when they gave the perfect rendition of two songs dedicated to mothers. This performance began what definitely turned out to be a delightful evening.

After the previous Saturday evening Mass the men were heard singing but no one really expected them to sing, nor did the congregation realise what charming voices they had, until the following day. What better way to start the launch of the FLU than to declare in a really positive way that men are or should be the heads of families. They should be the leaders of their homes. Their performance was well received by everyone present.

Then came the recently confirmed candidates who showed that young persons can and do dress in eye-catching, yet decidedly decent outfits. Both the young men and women in their casual outfits only added to the positive, family atmosphere that pervaded the evening.

The models trained by Jamie Joseph, another youngster of the parish, strutted on the stage like professionals and later their elegantly designed evening dresses and male outfits caused quite a stir among the mothers and grannies present. It must be said the young men outclassed the females.

Guest artiste, Angela Ojoe gave a hair-raising performance with her beautiful voice followed by Jamie and her young escort doing a lip-sync. Then a monologue, entitled ”Parenting” stole the hearts of the guests and highlighted the theme of the evening.

Two confirmation candidates did a dance routine, which showed that there is abounding talent in young people and especially in Carenage. This talent should be recognised and developed.
Another surprise was the music from the Arima pan side, “Dayle White, Family and Friends” who played several songs dedicated to mothers.

The altar servers must not be forgotten, they came in for high praise as, resplendent in their black and white outfits, they served tea, non-alcoholic beverages and enjoyable eats to all present, in a rather professional manner.

Of course, the programme was enhanced by the young articulate emcee Michelle Thorpe, and DJ Don whose music only added to the ambience of the evening.
What a delightful way to launch the Family Life Unit.
